FAMILY FOCUSED. JUSTICE DRIVEN. Barrett Thomas

A Judge's Journey
Path and Purpose

"Every step prepared me for this moment. Every chapter taught me that families deserve more than legal decisions — they deserve fairness, dignity, and compassion."
-Barrett
Barrett Thomas’s path to the bench hasn’t been a straight line. He’s worn many hats, such as law enforcement officer, prosecutor, family law attorney, and community leader. Each role gave him a different seat in the courtroom and a deeper understanding of how justice impacts real people.

A Lifetime of Service.
A Commitment to Justice.
Barrett Thomas is an attorney and business owner with deep roots in McLennan County and a lifelong commitment to service, integrity, and justice. With nearly two decades of experience in both law enforcement and the legal profession, Barrett brings a well-rounded perspective to the courtroom — one shaped by real-world experience and a deep respect for the law.
He began his career as a correctional officer and police officer, eventually serving as Chief of Police in Anson. These early roles gave him a firsthand understanding of how the justice system affects families and communities. He also became a trusted trainer of new police officers in courtroom conduct and ethics, and served on local boards dedicated to protecting children and victims of crime. After earning his law degree from Texas Tech University, Barrett served as an Assistant District Attorney, where he prosecuted cases and stood with victims in their pursuit of justice.
Currently, Barrett is the managing attorney of Lighthouse Legal Services, a respected Texas law firm known for fairness, integrity, and compassionate advocacy. For more than a decade, he has helped guide families through some of life’s most difficult moments — earning recognition as a SuperLawyers honoree from 2017 to 2025. He also has been voted among the "Best in Waco" in both in family and criminal law. He was a member of 35th Class of the Leadership Waco and continues to serve the Chamber in varies capacities.
Barrett is running for District Judge because he believes McLennan County families deserve a fair, experienced, and principled leader on the bench — someone who will ensure every person is treated with dignity and respect. The 170th District Court is a civil court room that has historically handled family law cases in addition to a smaller portion of civil disputes. Barrett is the only candidate who brings both family and civil law experience to the bench.
Barrett lives in Waco with his wife, Charla, a fellow attorney, and is a proud father of four: twin sons Will and Aaron, and daughters Adellyn and Lauren. His sons are now grown, and Barrett will be soon be a grandfather later this year. Barrett cherishes the opportunity to guide his daughters through their last few school years. His family is the foundation of his life — and the heart of his commitment to serving this community.

Hi Friends!
I’m Barrett Thomas, a 5th-generation Wacoan running to ensure McLennan County has a district court dedicated to family law – to put families and children first! Did you know 45% of cases heard in McLennan County's district courts are family law cases? Although our local judiciary is excellent, none have experience in family law—a field with unique statutes, deadlines, and standards that differ from other areas of practice.
For 25 years, I’ve worked hard to protect families and children - first, as a police officer, then, as a felony prosecutor prosecuting crimes against women and children, and for the past 15 years, serving as a family lawyer.
More importantly, I am a conservative, faith-driven father raising my own family right here in Waco. Like you, we’ve been active in local schools, churches and community organizations and I understand the real challenges our community faces. I am committed to addressing those issues in a positive, fair, and impartial way, so that McLennan County families can thrive while honoring our county’s conservative history.
I hope you will join me in my mission. Together, we can make sure McLennan County has at least one court where families will be truly heard – and where an experienced practitioner will thoughtfully consider the emotional and psychological realities that comes with family law cases and the laws and standards specific to family law, and will make sound rulings that will shape a stronger future for generations to come
